Breast cancer in Romania – an alarming situation

Breast cancer in Romania has reached a number of 10,000 cases annually, and patients present themselves to the doctor when the condition is in an advanced stage, which is why the situation is alarming.

Between 1960 and 2008, the incidence of breast cancer increased from approximately 11 cases to 28 cases per sample of 100,000 women, and the situation persists even today.

Doctors come up with a series of tips to prevent breast cancer, because the success of the treatment is closely related to the stage in which the condition is discovered.

Regarding the incidence of breast cancer, Romania unfortunately follows the worldwide trend of increasing the number of diseases.

HOW DO WE PREVENT BREAST CANCER?

Breast cancer is one of the most common diseases in women, although it can be prevented. The risk of developing breast cancer depends a lot on the lifestyle of each woman, but also on genetic factors. Because October has been declared International Breast Cancer Prevention Month, we will present some key tips by which it can be prevented.

The approach to breast cancer is mainly aimed at prevention of the condition and personalized treatment if the disease has already set in. Although this disease can be prevented, in Romania, 10,000 women are diagnosed with advanced or metastatic breast cancer every year.

BREAST CANCER CAN BE PREVENTED

Every woman should know that a balanced lifestyle can help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. There are several breast cancer risk factors that we can minimize.

    • Body weight – overweight women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, especially at menopause. In this context, an active lifestyle and a balanced diet will help you maintain an optimal weight throughout your life.

    • Diet – when we say diet we don’t mean weight loss. The diet represents a food lifestyle that each person attributes to himself. Thus, every woman must have a diet based especially on fruits, vegetables and quality proteins from fish. In addition, Anadolu specialists recommend a diet low in refined sweets and fats.

    • Alcohol – excessive alcohol consumption is an important risk factor for developing breast cancer.

    • Sedentarism – lack of regular physical activity leads to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The advice of specialists is to do sports at least twice a week.

Regular visits to the doctor (once or twice a year) and monthly self-examination are some of the best breast cancer prevention routines.

Forms of cancer of the lymphatic system

WHAT IS HODGKIN AND NON-HODGKIN LYMPHON?

Lymphoma or lymphatic cancer is a type of cancer that mainly affects cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes.

FORMS OF LYMPHATIC SYSTEM CANCER

Lymphatic cancer (lymphoma) can be of two types:

  • Hodgkin’s lymphoma;
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma;

Globally, lymphoma is the 5th most common type of cancer in men and 7th in women. Once the diagnosis of lymphoma is confirmed, doctors perform a new series of screening tests and biopsies, to determine the stage of the condition and its form. Lymphoma can have two main forms, depending on the affected cells, the speed with which the disease acts and the arrangement of the cancer cells that can be seen under a microscope.

Hodgkin’s lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease) occurs more frequently in people who have been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus, in patients with the HIV virus or in the case of people with a genetic predisposition. In laboratory tests, Hodgkin’s lymphoma appears as an abnormal arrangement and development of type B cells, and the diagnosis is made immediately after confirming the existence of this type of cells in the body.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is the most common form of lymphatic cancer and can start anywhere in the body. It can start in a single lymph node (uninodular) or in several nodes (plurinodular). The diagnosis of Nono-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and the stage of the condition is established according to the shape and size of the nodules.

LYMPHATIC CANCER TREATMENT INCLUDES:

  • Chemotherapy;
  • Radiotherapy;
  • Targeted therapy;
  • The operation;
  • Application of high doses of chemotherapy accompanied by stem cell transplantation.

Transplantation of stem cells in the case of Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Studies show that stem cell transplantation can greatly improve the survival rate of patients with aggressive cancer. The administration of a growth factor, G-CSF, can be recommended as an adjunct to chemotherapy. This growth factor is actually a natural protein, produced by the healthy body and which can significantly increase the tolerability of chemotherapy and can protect the body from the occurrence of serious infections.

Treatment options for children with cancer

Cancer in children is not considered common, which is why treatments for young people under the age of 15 are under continuous research. Clinical trials in pediatric oncology represent research that aims to improve current treatments through effective methods and even find new treatment options.

Treatment options for children with cancer

Oncological treatment in children depends on the stage of the disease, but also on the possible side effects. In addition, in the case of pediatric cancer, the general state of health of the patient is also very important, which can influence the choice of one treatment option over another.

Surgery for children with cancer

Whether we are talking about malignant or benign tumors, the operation is necessary to remove the tumor, but also the tissue around it.

Chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer in children

Chemotherapy is used to destroy cancer cells and stop their ability to grow. In the field of pediatric oncology, children respond well to this treatment and at the same time, they have a greater capacity to recover after high doses of chemotherapy, compared to adults. Thus, oncologists can usually opt for higher doses of chemotherapy in the case of children, precisely to treat the condition as efficiently as possible.

Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy involves the use of controlled doses of radiation on the tumor and aims to destroy cancer cells, so that they do not affect healthy tissues. Oncologists use an advanced radiotherapy technology, through which the dose of radiation is focused only on the tumor area, without affecting the surrounding healthy tissues.

Stereotactic radiotherapy – modern oncological treatment

Stereotactic radiotherapy is one of the most modern oncological treatments for children. This is based on an identification system capable of precisely locating cancerous tumors.

The difference between stereotactic radiotherapy and classical radiotherapy consists in the radiation dose emitted and in its precision of action. In the case of stereotactic radiotherapy, the dose of radiation is lower, but applied strictly only to the tumor area.

In the field of pediatric oncology, stereotactic radiotherapy is a medical solution often recommended, especially because it limits the amount of radiation, which leads to the minimization of adverse effects.

ROBOTIC SURGERY

Robotic surgery offers numerous advantages for both patients and surgeons, representing a new step in minimally invasive surgery following laparoscopic surgery, which has already replaced conventional surgery in several fields.

What Robotic Surgery Provides for Patients?

1. Reduced Blood Loss and Lower Transfusion Needs:

Robotic surgical procedures are associated with less blood loss, especially in cancer surgery, reducing the need for intraoperative or postoperative blood transfusions.

2. Less Pain, Fewer Painkillers:

Robotic surgery eliminates the need for large incisions, resulting in less postoperative pain, requiring fewer painkillers for patients.

3. Shorter Hospital Stay:

Robotic-assisted procedures lead to a shorter hospitalization time compared to open surgery. In many procedures, patients are discharged on the day of surgery or the following day. Patients recover faster, resume normal physical activities sooner, and experience an easier recovery.

4. Lower Infection Risk:

The risk of infection is reduced in robotic surgery since the abdomen is not opened extensively, and there is less bleeding.

5. Improved Cosmetic Results:

Robotic surgery does not require large incisions in the abdominal wall, and all interventions are performed through 3 or 4 small openings in the abdomen. Thus, patients have fewer scars, contributing to improved cosmetic results.

6. High-Resolution Three-Dimensional Imaging:

While standard laparoscopic images are obtained through a single camera, robotic surgery uses two high-definition cameras during the operation, providing a three-dimensional image with a 10x/12x magnification. Robotic instruments can reach places that cannot be accessed by the surgeon’s hand alone, allowing visualization of structures too small to be seen with the naked eye. This capability enables the surgeon to operate on parts of the abdominal or other cavities that cannot be accessed through open surgery.

7. Greater Range of Motion:

The latest-generation robot has four robotic arms. One controls the camera, and the other three support surgical instruments. The two arms represent the surgeon’s left and right hands. The additional arm performs supplementary tasks, such as tissue separation and retraction, and following the surgical suture. The robot’s end effectors, called EndoWrist, provide seven degrees of freedom in movement and two degrees of axial rotation, mimicking three hand movements and three wrist movements for grasping and cutting. The greater range of motion of these instruments eliminates many challenges encountered in two-dimensional laparoscopic surgical procedures.

8. Filtering Hand Tremors:

Manual movements of the surgeon are scaled and transposed to the robot’s arms through a computerized system. Even the smallest hand tremors are eliminated by this technology. The robotic system filters out tremors larger than 6 Hz, allowing procedures that require high sensitivity to be performed with ease.

Personalized Solutions for Fighting Cancer: Molecular Profiling and Next-Generation Therapies

Dear patient,

In these challenging moments you are facing, it is crucial to understand that there are advanced treatment options that can make a difference in the fight against cancer. We want to tell you about two revolutionary methods, molecular profiling, and targeted therapies, which have changed the way cancer is treated and offer better chances of recovery.

Molecular Profiling: Discovering Tumour DNA

Molecular profiling is like a “magic mirror” that reveals the secrets of your tumour DNA. This advanced analysis provides us with a clear picture of the molecular characteristics of cancer cells. Why is this important? Because every cancer is unique, and molecular profiling allows us to better understand what is happening in your body.

Imagine that DNA is a book of your life, and molecular profiling reads it to discover the specific stories of your tumour. This information helps specialist doctors choose treatments that target those specific characteristics of cancer cells. It’s like customizing the treatment to effectively fight against your unique tumour.

Targeted Therapies and Immunotherapy: Efficient and Personalized Weapons

Now, let’s talk about “smart weapons” in the fight against cancer: targeted therapies and immunotherapy.

These treatments are like specialized experts that focus directly on cancer cells without significantly affecting healthy cells.

Targeted therapies are like arrows that attack only the weak points of tumour cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. They are designed to be effective and minimize the unpleasant side effects of other treatments.

Immunotherapy, on the other hand, is like training for your immune system. It activates it to recognize and destroy cancer cells. It’s like giving your immune system an “energy boost” to intensify its response against cancer.

Why Do These Therapies Matter to You?

Dear reader, choosing molecular profiling and personalized therapies means that your treatment will be specially tailored to confront your unique cancer. Specialists in partner clinics will not use a “one-size-fits-all” approach but will create a personalized strategy to maximize your chances of recovery.

These modern therapies are not only effective but also give you more control over your treatment. We understand that this is an important decision, so we want to assure you that we are here to support you every step of the way. Choose the options that best suit you, and we will be by your side on this journey.

With hope,

The VIPmed Team
